The Stedelijk sheds in Everyday, Someday and Other Stories (Collection 1950 - 1980) new light on
the “minimal gestures” in art: work of Carl Andre, Robert Ryman, Maria van Elk, Jan Dibbets en
Jo Baer is combined with that of Ganesh Haloi and Chavalit Soemprungsuk who, from India and
Thailand are not frequently counted to minimal art (February 19th 2022 – December 31st 2022).
Minimal Gestures
In the sixties some artist distanced themselves
from the idea that art should refer to external
reality. They stressed properties such as
simplicity, harmony and seriality and used
geometrical – abstract forms and sober colours
in their work. For these artist it was not about
showing their individual handwriting: their
works often looked like industrially produced
products. In this hall examples of minimal art are
presented of among others Carl Andre Jo Baer
and Robert Ryman, and of artist that also work
with minimal resources but did not belong to this
movement such as Maria van Elk and Chavalit
Soemprungsuk.
