Reconstructie van de
figuratie van de wanden
In 2013 kreeg Maria van Elk van het Stedelijk
Museum Schiedam het verzoek om de Soft
Living Room te reconstrueren. Over de op z’n
minst curieuze levensloop van dit sleutelwerk
uit de jaren 60 heeft u in dit boek al het nodige
kunnen lezen. Het werk, zo vertelde Maria
mij, is destijds ontstaan vanuit een minimum
aan ontwerptekeningen. Het was de tijd dat
het materiaal en het idee het werk dicteerde.
Nadeel van deze spontane wijze van werken is
dat er weinig tot geen documentatie is over-
geleverd en dat bleek het werk na ruim 30
jaar onzichtbaarheid lelijk parten gespeeld te
hebben. Toen het Stedelijk Museum Schiedam
de SLR in een expositie rond naoorlogse kunst
in Holland wilde opnemen bleek reconstructie
de enige optie (gelukkig bleek niet exposeren
geen optie).
Het enige beeldmateriaal van de oorspron-
kelijke SLR dat beschikbaar was, waren 14
zwart-witfoto’s, gemaakt tijdens exposities in
1969 (Lausanne) en 1971 (Haarlem) en een
kleurenfoto uit 2000 van een verfomfaaide
doek waarop de binnenwand is te zien.
Maria van Elk vroeg mij of ik aan de hand van
die foto’s een reconstructie zou kunnen maken
van de figuratie op binnen- en buitenwand. Ik
hou wel van een uitdaging en een puzzel, dus
toog ik vol goede moed aan het werk. Waar te
beginnen?
Naast vele onduidelijkheden was er een aantal
vaststaande feiten: het formaat van de SLR
(diameter van 4 meter), de vorm (een regelma-
tige hexadecagoon) en de plaats van de ingang.
Maar wat te doen met de foto’s waarop de
ingang niet te zien is? Om dat probleem op te
lossen bleken de foto’s uit 1971 van de expositie
in Haarlem van grote waarde. Op deze foto’s
is een klinkervloer te zien. De maten van deze

In 2013 the Municipal Museum of Schiedam
commissioned Maria van Elk to reconstruct the
Soft Living Room. A lot of the curious history
of this key work from the sixties can be read
in this book. The original work, Maria tells
me, was constructed from minimal technical
drawings. It was in the time that the material
and the idea dictated the work. A disadvantage
of this spontaneous approach is that little to
no documentation has remained and after 30
years of invisibility, this turned out to be quite
an impediment. When the Municipal Museum
of Schiedam chose to include the SLR in an
exposition of post-war art in Holland, a total
reconstruction was the only option (luckily, not
showing the work was not an option).
The only available pictures of the original 1968
SLR were 14 black-and-white photos, made
during exhibitions in 1969 (Lausanne) and
1971 (Haarlem) and a colour photo from 2000
of a battered rag on which the inside wall is
visible.
Maria van Elk asked me to reconstruct the
figuration of the inside and outside walls based
on these pictures. I enjoy a challenge and
puzzles, so I bent myself to the task with enthu-
siasm. Where to begin?
Besides many ambiguities, there were a number
of established facts: the format of the SLR
(diameter 4 meters), the shape (a regular hexa-
decagon) and the location of the entrance. But
how to use the photos in which the entrance is
not visible?
To solve this problem, the pictures from the
1971 exhibition in Haarlem were of great value.
