klinkers zijn bekend: 210 x 50 mm (z.g. Waal- these bricks is known: 210 x 50 mm (known as
formaat). Op de foto’s is duidelijk te zien dat
deze klinkers in halfsteensverband zijn gelegd
en dat leverde een mooi en overzichtelijk raster
op. Met dit raster en het gegeven van een regel-
matige 16-hoek was deze puzzel door goed te
kijken naar de 14 foto’s relatief simpel op te
lossen.
Voor zowel de binnenwand als de buitenwand
heb ik een schematisch bovenaanzicht gemaakt
waarop ik de zichtlijnen van de foto’s heb
ingetekend (zie blz. 85 (buitenwand) en blz.
90 (binnenwand)). Door de foto’s in de juiste
volgorde en perspectief aan elkaar te plakken
ontstond een betrouwbare reconstructie van de
figuratie op de wanden (zie blz. 84-85 en blz.
88). De ontbrekende segmenten kon Maria van
Elk toen eenvoudig aanvullen.
Maria van Elk ontwierp de Soft Living Room
in 1968 om even te kunnen ontsnappen aan
de waanzin van de dag. Het was bedoeld als
een ruimte voor contemplatie en meditatie,
een ruimte voor een goed gesprek. Op 29 juni
2017 zat ik in het Stedelijk Museum Schiedam
voor de eerste maal in de Soft Living Room. Het
was een paar dagen voor de opening van de
expositie Collectie-keuze Wilma Süto. In de SLR
was restauratrice Katja van de Braak bezig met
de laatste puntjes op de ‘i’. Terwijl ik enkele
foto’s van haar nam ontspon zich een bijzonder
geanimeerd gesprek. Toen ik een kwartier later
weer buiten de SLR stond realiseerde ik mij dat
dit kunstwerk nog niets aan oorspronkelijke
kracht had ingeboet.

are clearly laid in a parquet pattern and this
yields an orderly and usable grid. This grid,
combined with the hexadecagon shape and a
close study of the 14 photos, meant that the
puzzle could be solved relatively easily.
For the inner and outer walls, I made a sche-
matic view from above upon which I drew lines
of sight from the photos (see page 85 for the
inner wall and page 90 for the outer wall). By
pasting together these pictures in the correct
order and perspective a reliable reconstruction
of the figuration on the original walls arose (see
pages 84-85 and 88). The missing segments
could now easily be filled by the artist.
Maria van Elk made the Soft Living Room in
1968 to escape from the madness of the day.
It was meant as a space for contemplation and
meditation, a space for good conversation.
On the 29th of June, 2017, I sat in the Soft
Living Room (in the Municipal Museum of
Schiedam) for the first time. It was a couple
of days before the opening of the exposition
Collectie-keuze Wilma Süto. Restorer Katja
van de Braak was busy with final preparations
inside the SLR. While I shot a few photos of
her, an animated conversation arose between
us. After emerging from the SLR a quarter of
an hour later I realised that the artwork had
not lost any of its original power.
